Tribute Sonny Rollins Prof. Hiromi Inayoshi
No matter how far he ventured into the avant-garde,
no matter how freely he deconstructed the world of sound,
he always returned, in the end,
to that unmistakable “Rollins spirit.”
That immense sense of humor.
Those singing melodies.
And that sound which affirmed life itself.
Beyond the tenor saxophone,
he continued to show us, note by note,
what it truly means to improvise as a human being.
A solitary seeker who practiced alone on the bridge,
yet continued to say, even until the very end,
“I still haven’t arrived.”
And still, within his music lived an overwhelming life force —
one capable of transforming even suffering into humor.
The sunlight of “St. Thomas.”
The prayer of “Freedom Suite.”
The freedom of “Way Out West.”
And true to the name “Saxophone Colossus,”
he was indeed one of the giants of jazz.
Yet his sound was never oppressive.
It was always deeply human, warm,
and somehow welcoming.
That is why, when we listen to Sonny Rollins,
it feels less like listening to music
and more like entering into a dialogue with life itself.
Thank you, Sonny.
Your sound will continue to vibrate through the air of this world
for generations to come.
Finally, I leave you with the performance I cherish most:
“St. Thomas” — the unforgettable 1962 live recording at the Village Gate with Don Cherry.
R.I.P. Sonny Rollins
With deepest respect and gratitude.
