リスボンとバルセロナを股にかけるクァルテット。果てしなく続いていきそうな壮大なフリー・インプロヴィゼーションは、沈黙から爆音まで最大限の振れ幅でありながらも、緩みを一瞬たりともみせぬ頑健な構築力で無敵の存在感。 “Before the Silence”を3つの単語に区切り、アルバムそのものをタイトルピースに仕上げた、シンプルかつ大局観ただよう構成だ。Red Trioのリズム隊として高い評価を得る、ガブリエル・フェランディーニ(ds)とエルナーニ・ファウシュティーノ(db)の鉄壁のタイム感と持続力がまず驚異的。多彩な切り口の楽器間のインタラクションで幕を開ける”Before”, アグスティ・フェルナンデスのピアノがほぼ完全にパーカッション化し、10分以上にわたって繰り広げられるツインドラムのごとき変拍子の応酬に手に汗にぎる”The”、静寂に息づく有機的な時空の拡がりに生の躍動を見る”Silence”。アルベルト・シレラ(sax)が発する伸びやかなエナジーのフロー、それに対比される細部の遊戯の充実には往年のフリーの確かな脈流を見る。どこを切り取ってもマックスに漲る実力の断層。スタミナが違う。2015年カタルーニャ録音。多弁で華やかなステージングもライヴならでは。(*文中敬称略)

Spanning the jazz scenes of Lisbon and Barcelona, this full-on quartet and their spectacular improvisations ranging from deep silence to roaring mayhem give the impression of a never ending river. They present an all-conquering presence underpinned by a sturdy construction, never slackening for even a moment. The album title “Before the Silence” was split into three tracks, and floating within this composition is a deceptively simple but broad perspective. Gabriel Ferrandini and Hernâni Faustino, acclaimed as the rhythm section of Portuguese RED Trio, demonstrate an extraordinay iron-clad time sense and endurance. Before ( Track 1) raises the curtain with a dazzling instrumental interaction from many perspectives. In The (Track 2), Agustí Fernández’s piano is almost completly percussionized, and an exchange of irregular time with Ferrandini sounding like twin drums extending for more than 10 minutes drives the listener to a state of white-knuckled suspense. In Silence (Track 3), a vigorous movement of life is seen in an organic expanse of space and time alive with stillness. An unrestricted energy flow generated by Albert Cirera on sax, and the contrasting completeness of his freaky details present the assured pulsating flow of 1960’s free, its golden age. The quartet’s musical stamina is olympian, and the whole album is a hologram of outstanding competency; wherever you cut you find the same brilliance. This album recorded in Catalonia in 2015 is a testimony to such voluble and spectacular staging, which can only be captured in a stunning live performance like this one. (Kayo Fushiya)

Este quarteto formou-se nas cenas interactivas de jazz de Lisboa e de Barcelona. Na massiva improvisação livre que parece continuar indefinidamente e na sua amplitude dinâmica, flutuando entre silêncio e rugido, o quarteto mostra uma presença inultrapassável, com uma energia que nunca afrouxa. O álbum “Before the Silence” divide-se literalmente em três componentes (Before/The/Silence), embora o álbum pareça constituir uma grande peça única. A estrutura é simples, ao mesmo tempo que revela uma envolvente musical muito rica. A secção rítmica, com Gabriel Ferrandini (bateria) e Hernâni Faustino (contrabaixo), também conhecidos por integrarem o Red Trio, é excepcional; o seu sentido do tempo e capacidade de sustentação são soberbas. Before (track 1) abre com perspectivas diversas de interacção entre instrumentos. The (track 2), na qual o piano enfático de Agustí Fernández sustenta um duelo emocionante de mais de 10 minutos com Gabriel Ferrandini, como se tratasse de duas baterias-gémeas e Silence (Track 3), onde se assiste à expansão orgânica do espaço-tempo de vívidos dinamismos no reino do silêncio. O fluxo directo de energia e as deambulações livres de Albert Cirera lembram-nos de imediato o free jazz dos anos 60, a sua era dourada. A música pode desfrutar-se na sua plenitude em qualquer ponto do disco. Stamina está a um outro nível. Foi gravado em 2015 no festival VIC, na Catalunha. Performance deslumbrante de vocabulários musicais múltiplos, ainda melhor com gravação ao vivo. (Kayo Fushiya)
