ベルリン出身、ケルン在住のピアニスト、ライア・ゲンクによるトリオ アルバム。彼の地のジャズ・ピアノ文化の立役者であるジョン・テイラー門下のひとり。バンド名の「リエゾン・トニック」(強まる結びつき) が示すとおり、マルクス・ブラウン (べース) 、イェンス・デュッペ（ドラム）というケルン・シーンの実力者たちと織りなす音世界はタイトで濃密。削ぎ落とした美意識が光る楽曲とアレンジは、鮮やかなイメージ投射と野太いメロディライン、確かな技巧が冴えるインプロヴィゼーション・パートを巻き込んで、センシティヴでありながら軸のブレない強度で展開される。ゲンクのピアノはこれ見よがしの華美さに走らず、重厚で滋味深い音色。知／情のバランスが取れている。直覚秀でるベースとドラムはシャープなタイム感覚がそのまま叙情性と直結。東洋風なメロディやバッハを思わせるフレーズの断片は、聴き終えてからもフラッシュバックのように脳内で反芻され、強い磁力で楽想へと引き戻される。艶やかなスキャットとヴォーカルも加わる ‘In Progress’ (track.3)、’You Gave Me’ (track.6)、’Butterflies’ (track.10) など、音楽の芯にある成熟した静けさに打たれる。叶わぬ過去、光明への助走期のような現在、未知の世界へのイマジナティヴな眼差しなど—こころの春秋がページを繰る毎に木漏れ日のようにたち現れるソング・ブック。ほぼ全曲ライア・ゲンクによるオリジナル。(＊文中敬称略。伏谷佳代)
Trio album led by Laia Genc, hailed from Berlin, now in Cologne based pianist. She belongs to John Taylor school, a leading figure who greatly contributed to Cologne jazz scene. As per the band name Liaison Tonique (roughly translated into English; strengthening connection), a tight, rich sound world is interwoven together with master-hands of the local scene, Markus Brown (bass) and Jens Dueppe (drums). In tunes and arrangements in which the trio’s pared-back aesthetic sense shines, vivid image projection, throaty melody lines and improvised parts with clear finesse are brought together, evolving in subtle ways while maintaining a strong sense of direction. The piano adds composed, dignified and nourishing tone colors without being ostentatious or showy. Genc’s play has a balance between head and heart. Highly intuitive bass and drums are directly connected with a certain lyricism while maintaining a sharp sense of time. Even after one has finished listening, fragments of oriental melody and phrases that recall Bach continue to echo in the listener’s mind like flashbacks, bringing one back to the melodic themes with their strong magnetic force. Tracks such as In Progress (track 3), You Gave Me (track 6) and Butterflies (track10), in which the burnished scat and vocals also heard, are struck by the mature serenity found in the core of the music. This album is a songbook that the spring and autumn of one’s heart— unfulfilled past, run up period towards a bright future, imaginative look at an as-yet-unknown world— appear like sunlight filtering through the trees as the pages are turned by.
