2. ”Lonely Dancer in the Rain”、9.
Johanna Schneider’s Debut Album: Opening up the New Dimension of Vocal Jazz
Effortlessly crossing over genres, composing /arranging with meticulous ease brimming over with feeling, exceptional vocal strength, an elegant, impressive, and commanding stage presence, and so the list goes on heralding the birth of an all-round diva of great power, a beautiful performer never pandering to her audience. Johanna Schneider, now 28 years old from Bamberg in Bavaria, awoke to music early in life, debuting on stage at the age of 14. Later studying under Romy Camerum at Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen where she seems to have inherited her teacher’s wide musical scale, and is now making her mark by freely flowing between her elegant lyricism and tumultuous streams of fearless energy drawn from her roots. Her own pieces, including “My Song” written at the age of 16, comfortably take their place in the lineup alongside works by Van Morrison, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Bill Evans, and so on. The order and choice of tracks are in some ways a journey through her music life. Tracks like “Lonely Dancer in the Rain (2)”, “Ethiopian Moon (9)” and the title piece “Pridetime(12)” demonstrate a power once heard, never forgotten. Their quality and impressive presence, equal to the famous tunes on the album, infer her already mature sense of balance as both composer and arranger. In these tunes, the leading Jazz figures, Ack van Rooyen and Tony Lakatos, are irreplaceable; their presence is exquisitely illustrated in the rich solos, also among the finest passages in the album. The backing band, all gifted musicians in the German swing jazz scene, is superb, especially the pianist Tizian Jost (her piano teacher) working as the driving force of the album with his springy touch and fresh tone colors. Iron-tight rhythm squad, Andreas Kurz and Bastian Juette are also striking as always. Their performance is a fusion of tightly structured band sounds with a capacity to totally embrace ―Being free from any boundary to polish and finish every aspect of each song into “Johanna’s style.” A style with a strong affinity between the instrumental and voice parts, exquisite handling of the reins with distinctive holding and releasing of emotion. The last track “Pridetime” which is winding up this debut album in a great invigorating flourish can be considered Johanna’s perfect presentation. (Kayo Fushiya)
