A New Project by a Wizard of the Trombone, Christophe Schweizer
Recently I have come across several newly released CDs featuring the trombone, and all of them have proved to be pretty serious works. From among this lineup of CDs, the Young Rich & Famous, a new project by Christophe Schweizer, currently based in Hamburg, was particularly refreshing in terms of its scale and the expression of their philosophy. Schweizer was born in Switzerland and being influenced by his father, a church organist, was awakened to music at an early age. He studied at the Bern Conservatory of Music, Banff, and New School; however, he has established his career almost by a process of self-education, while distinguishing himself in the punk and jazz scenes. He is typical of the so-called can-do personality, and his broad musical panorama gives a sense of breaking through and exhilaration. There is no contradiction between his approach and his style. His compositions are immensely polished with plenty of room for free improvisation. And yet, the cool awakening produced by the solid framework and momentary groove beat coexist well together. The pieces and improvisation are well balanced and virtually indistinguishable. Just as expressed in the CD title “Grand Grace,” a graceful dynamism permeates the whole work. From among the quartet members, the drummer Christian Lillinger is especially brilliant on the ear. As might be expected from Gunter Sommer’s favorite apprentice, his all-round interplay and dazzling cymbal work expands sound space out to many layers. The double bass is taken by Oliver Potratz, who has a reputation as a musician of real talent. His rich career in tango and contemporary music besides jazz solidly support the playing here. When seeing this quartet, you sometimes get the feeling the two veterans, Schweizer and Potratz, have let the two younger players, Lillinger and Wanja Slavin, roam free. The coexistence of sounds produced from such different body heat can be sensed in the mature mood. Apart from Schweizer, all the musicians are based in Berlin and all of them play multiple instruments. The project name is Young, Rich, & Famous – the last word is certainly humorous; although still young, their talent and experience are the real thing. (Kayo Fushiya)
