トーマス・リュッケルトはケルンを拠点とするピアニスト。リー・コニッツとのプロジェクトなどで活躍しているが、ケルン・シーンの若手ふたりを擁したこの編成のトリオでは2012年の『Meera』に続いて２年ぶりのリリース。一見オーソドックスなピアノ・トリオのスタイルのようでありながら、深い叙情性のなかに落とし込まれた変拍子や削ぎ落とされたアレンジメントのセンスが光る。これ見よがしな新しさの追求が形骸化して抜け殻になってしまったようなジャズ界の現況とは対照的に、極めてシンプルな形態をとりつつも、音間にひそむ思いもかけない側面をあぶり出してゆく。単音でも存在感抜群の内省的でニュアンスに富んだピアノの音色は、空間的な拡がりを感じさせてくれる暖かな静寂を身上とする。巷によくある、録音環境によって生み出された真空状態のそれとは全く異なる。レザ・アスカリとファビアン・アレンドという優れたリズム隊を擁しながらも、肉体に直截的に働きかける解りやすい刺激やグルーヴはあえて鳴りを潜め、より高次元にある、響きへのセンスとその把握力、メロディストとしての美質が若いミュージシャンからうまく引き出されている。リーダーであるリュッケルトのオリジナルや、モリコーネ、ポール・モチアン、ヤコブ・ブロなどの作品が表題曲である <Parvaneh>に挟みこまれる構成。<Parvaneh>はペルシア語で ”蝶” を意味し、レザ・アスカリのペンによる。とりわけアルバムの終曲はじっくりと聴かせる。デジャヴュなようでいて、どこか異質な音の残像が翻る蝶のイメージとオーヴァーラップする。ちかちかするような一瞬の幻惑であるが、思えば音楽の新芽とはこうした捉えがたく表現しがたい、ぎりぎりの一線にこそあるものかもしれない。柔らかな音の波に洗われながらも知覚が研ぎ澄まされてゆく、静謐なスリリングさがある。トーマス・リュッケルトの揺るがぬ信念と美学が感じられる１枚。(伏谷佳代)

Thomas Rueckert is a Cologne-based pianist known among other works for his lively part in the project with Lee Konitz. He fronts the same two young musicians from the Cologne scene in this their second album “Parvaneh” released two years after “Meera” in 2013. At first glance, they appear to be an orthodox piano trio, but irregular time incorporated into deep lyricism and stripped-down arrangements shine through, in contrast to the present state of jazz music, an empty shell in showy pursuit of newness. The trio taking an extremely simple form brings to light unexpected aspects lurking between the sounds. The piano tones ― giving a distinguished presence even to single notes ― are introspective and rich in nuance with a balmy stillness and a feeling of expanding space. It is totally different from the tones generated by the vacuum of today’s recording environment. While leading the excellent rhythm players, Reza Askari and Fabian Arends, he holds back the simple stimulation and grooves directly working on the body, and from young musicians skilfully brings out their sensibility and understanding of sounds, and their sterling qualities as melodists, all of which exist at an even higher dimension. In the album, Rueckert’s original pieces, and works by Morricone, Paul Motian, and Jakob Bro are inserted between two versions of the title piece “Parvaneh” penned by Reza Askari. In particular the final track naturally encourages careful listening with a feeling of déjà-vu, but even so residual images of slightly dissimilar sounds overlap with the image of a fluttering butterfly ― parvaneh is Persian for butterfly. There is a flickering instant fascination, but come to think of it, any new breathing or charm of music is illusive and only found at such edges; difficult to grasp and express. The piece is tranquil, yet strangely thrilling, finely sharpening the senses, yet soothing with the soft waves of sound. This album captures Thomas Rueckert’s unwavering belief and philosophy.
