In memory of Seiichi Sugita by Liudas Mockūnas
2018年12月、JazzTokyoの編集長ケニー稲岡とジャズ研究者の齊藤聡が、横浜にある杉田誠一のジャズクラブ「ビッチェズ・ブリュー」に四夜にわたるレジデンスを企画してくれた。（注：齊藤が手を貸したのは２度目のレジデンスの時で、初来日時は杉田と稲岡が企画した）杉田氏と出会ったのはその時が初めてで、もちろんすべての公演に杉田氏は顔を出してくれた。これらの現場の雰囲気はとても特別だった。スペースはとても小さく、ミュージシャン、関係者、観客の距離がとても近く、親密だった。この期間中、私は日本の素晴らしいミュージシャンたちと共演する機会を得た。すべての演奏は録音され、１年遅れで私のレジデンス・コンピレーション・アルバム「Live at Bitches Brew feat. 坂田明、梅津和時、林栄一、大友良英、纐纈雅代」が母国リトアニアのNoBusinessレコードからリリースされた（注：浦邊雅祥とのセッションは浦邊のパフォーマンスが大きくマイクから外れて収録できなかった）。
杉田誠一との２度目の出会いは2022年、私のトリオで日本ツアーを行ったときだった。そのツアーの一夜がBitches Brewで組まれていたのだが、そこでおかしなことが起こった。私は4年ぶりにクラブに戻って来て杉田氏に会うのをとても楽しみにしていたし、もちろんリトアニアから持ってきたお土産もあった。ライヴ当日、私たちが到着すると、とても健康そうな初老の紳士が出迎えてくれた。サウンドチェックの間、私はその男性に杉田氏はいつ来る予定かと何度か尋ねた。しかし、その男性は杉田氏の到着時間については何も教えてくれなかった。ライヴが終わってレストランで夕食をとりながら、私はその男性に、その夜杉田氏に会えるのかどうか知っているかと尋ねると、その男性は「私が杉田です」と答えた。目の前に立っていたのは、おそらく2018年の杉田さんの半分くらいの大きさの男性だった。私たちが会わなかった５年の間に、彼は体重を半分に減らすことに成功したようだった。
謎が明らかになって、私たちは大笑いした。 そしてその後、特別なことが起こった。私たちがBitches Brewに戻ると、杉田氏が全面的に心を開いてくれた。杉田氏は、マイルス・デイヴィス、ドン・チェリー、サム・リヴァース、ピーター・ブロッツマン、エヴァン・パーカー、菊地雅章など、当時の偉大なジャズ・アーティストのアメリカ、ヨーロッパ、そして日本各地を旅して撮った60年代後半から70年代の写真集やオリジナル・ショットを持って来て見せてくれた。そして、多くのミュージシャンやアーティストのスタジオや自宅、コンサート会場を訪れた話をしてくれた。私たちはその夜、クラブを出るまでのおそらく２～３時間、杉田氏のアートや資料を巡り、杉田氏が好きだった音楽を聴いた。これらのレコードの何枚かは、彼が会い、一緒に仕事をしたミュージシャンたちから彼が直接入手したものだった。
その夜、私たちはとても温かく素晴らしい時間を過ごした。私たちが愛するジャズという音楽の歴史の一部となった、伝説的な人物に出会ったような気がした。ミュージアムや雑誌、アルバムのジャケットなどで目にする偉大なミュージシャンたちの歴史的な写真の多くは、杉田氏が撮影したものなのだから。
杉田氏の御霊よ天国で安らかに。

In December 2018 Tokyo Jazz Magazine editor Kenny Inaoka and jazz musicologist Akira Saito organized a four night residence for me at Seichi Sugita’s Bitches Brew jazz club in Yokohama. That was my first time I met Mr. Seichi and he was present at all shows that week. The atmosphere of these concerts was very special. The venue is tiny. So the distance between musicians, concerts organizers and the audience was very close and intimate. During that week I had a chance to play with a bunch of great Japanese musicians. All concerts were recorded and a year late I released my residence compilation album “Live at Bitches Brew “feat. Akira Sakata, Kazutoki Umezu, Eichi Hayashi Yoshihide Otomo and Masayo Koketsu.
My second meeting with Seiichi Sugita happened in 2023 while touring Japan with my trio. One of the concerts happened again at Bitchers Brew and a funny situation happened there. I was looking very much forward to be back at the club and meet Mr. Sugiita and of course had some gifts for him I brought from Lithuania. On the day of the concert we arrived and were met by a very healthy looking elder gentleman whom I was sure have never met before. During our soundcheck I asked the man a couple of times when Mr. Sugiita is going to show up. The man was smiling or almost laughing but he didn’t tell me anything about Sugiita’s arrival time. After our concert during the dinner at the restaurant, I asked the man if he knows if we are going to meet Mr. Sugiita that night. Only than (after probably 3 hours spent together) the gentleman said that infact he was Mr. Seichi Sugitita. I couldn’t believe what I saw, the man who was standing in front of me probably was half the size of Mr. Seiichi from 2018. Appeared that during the 5 years we didn’t see each other he managed to lose half of his weight. We all laughed so much and very loud after the secret was opened up. And after that something very special happened. We went back to Bitches Brew and Mr. Seiichi truly opened to us. We had fantastic whiskey together and Mr. Sugita was bringing and showing his photo albums and original shots from late 60’s and 70’s he took while travelling to the US, Europe and around Japan of the Greatest Jazz Artists of those times, such as Miles Davis, Don Cherry, Sam Rivers, Peter Brotzmann, Evan Parker, Masabumi Kikutchi and many more. He told stories of his visits to the studios, homes concert venues of many musicians and artists. We spent probably 2-3 hours before leaving the club that night exploring Mr. Seichiis art and documents and listenening to the music Seiichi liked. Some of these records he got from the direct source, musicians he met and worked with.
We had such a warm and fantastic time that night. I had a feeling we met a legend, somebody who’s became a part of the history of music we love called jazz. It’s very true, because many of the historic photos of the Greats we see in the museums, magazines, album covers, etc. were taken by true artist Mr. Sugiita.
