間違いなくPooは天国にいる by サン・チョン

僕が初めてPooとPooの音楽に出会ったのは2010年のこと。そもそもはヴィレッジ・ヴァンガードにポール・モチアンを聴きに出かけたときだから、出会いは偶然だった。なんと、当夜の僕にとって最大の音楽的関心事はPooになってしまったのだ。彼が弾くソロはどれもありえないほど深く、美しく、テクニックがもてはやされる昨今では滅多にお目にかかれない内容だった。セッションが終わるのを待ちかねてレコーディングの話を持ちかけたところ彼の同意を得られ、これが僕らの付き合いの始まりとなった。
何故だか理由は定かではないのだが、僕らは当初から気心が知れ合う仲となり、音楽の感受性も似通っていたので、ここ５年間で２度レコーディングの機会を持った。しかし、Pooとスタジオに入るのはいつも出たとこ勝負でかつ神経にこたえる体験だった。彼がどのような鎮痛処置を施すか分からなかったからだ。たとえば、セッションの途中で彼が強力な鎮痛剤を服用したために倒れてしまい、彼が目覚めて録音を再開するまで僕とサウンド・エンジニアは何時間も待機せねばならないことがあった。また、コニャックで紛らわせようとしたこともあったが、なんとか説得して思い留まらせた。
Pooを知っている者は誰でも認識していたように、彼は彼の精神状態、とくに記憶に影響を与える重大な健康障害を抱えていた。彼と交友関係ができて以来、僕は彼の人生の瞬間瞬間が絶え間ない肉体的苦痛、混乱、金銭問題に起因する戦いの連続であることを知るようになった。しかしそれでもなお彼は歯を食いしばって前進することを止めなかった。なぜなら、彼にとって音楽が生きる目的であり、音楽に突き動かされて生を永らえていたのだから。その意味で彼は真の戦士であった。彼は真の意味で極限まで音楽を追い詰めていた。そんな彼に僕はできうる限り助けの手を差し伸べた。レストランやミュージアムに誘い出すことから食料品の買い出しなどの日常の雑務まで、また、市当局とのやりとりの手助けも。そんな時、彼は幸せだった。彼の汚れのない微笑みを見て僕も嬉しかった。やがて彼の不安定さが限度に達し、僕らの関係も正常ではなくなった。それでもなお、ほとんど最後まで僕らが関係を断つことはなかった。
Pooは僕に生きることの戦いについて多くのことを教えてくれた。そのことについて僕が感謝の念を忘れることはないだろう。彼の音楽を聴いて誰もが彼を思い出すだろう。彼は周囲の者とは平和な関係を築くことはできなかったが、彼の勇気ある生き方を忘れる者はいないだろう。間違いなくPooは天国にいる。

Sun Chung ● Poo surely is in a better place
I was first introduced to Poo and his music in 2010. It was a fortuitous meeting, as my intention was to go hear Paul Motian at the Village Vanguard. To my surprise during the concert, it was Poo that was the musical highlight for me. The solo parts he played during the concert were of rare depth and beauty, something not often heard these days where technique seems to be the overriding factor. I went to converse with him immediately after the concert, and talked to him about making a record. He agreed and this is how our association began.
I am not exactly sure why but we had a very good rapport and similar musical sensibilities from the get go, so we subsequently recorded together twice in the last five years. It was always an adventurous and a nerve racking experience to go into the studio with Poo, because you never knew on which kind of pain medication he was on. Once during the middle of a session, he took a pain killer so strong that he was knocked out for several hours, so me and the sound engineer had to wait until he woke up to resume recording. The next time, he wanted cognac, but I managed to convince him otherwise.
As anyone who knows Poo, he had major health problems which affected his mental state, especially his memory. Since being acquainted with him, I came to learn that every moment of his life was an incessant struggle, as he was in constant pain, confusion, and financial troubles. However he kept on going and going, through pure grit. He went on because he lived for his music, and was driven by it. He was a true warrior in this sense. He pushed the music to it’s limits until the very end.
I tried to help Poo in the best way I could, from going out to restaurants and museums, to daily chores such as grocery shopping and helping him with organizational matters. In these moments, he was happy, and his genuine smile was a pleasure to see.
However after a while, his instability took it’s toll and made our relationship unsteady. Despite these issues, we stayed in touch until almost the end.
Poo has taught me a lot about the struggles of life and I will always be grateful to him about that. He will be missed for his music. He will be missed for his life of courage in a world in which he could find no peace with his surroundings. Poo surely is in a better place.
