I had the honour of playing with Lee Konitz numerous times over the last 25 years and learned so much from him.
The very first time we played together, it was in 1995 in Marktoberdorf, a small village in Germany, there was no time for a rehearsal with the quartet, so Lee suggested, that he would play duo with every band member, that he just met. So when it was my turn to play „Body and Soul“ with him, he listened carefully to my playing and took some phrases of mine as a starting point for his own solo, and throughout his solo he would come back to me and „talk“ to me in a way, no other Saxophonist had ever done before.
When we did a 2 week long release tour for our duo album „Ashiya” around the time of his 80th’s birthday, he would concentrate and prepare all day for the concert and after the show he would have suggestions for the next night. F.E. “Why don’t you(me) play “Alone together” in the key of F minor and I(him) play it in D minor, or let’s play “I’ll Remember April“ in different tempo at the same time, he was so young at heart and adventurous.
On the last recording, we did together in 2014, that didn’t come out yet, he started singing a lot. Lee Konitz was a big influence for me with his devotion and love for jazz music. The last time we played together in Munich in 2017 he announced a tune by saying „We’re going to play „Stella by Starlight“, that we all know very well as if we played it for the first time.“ I miss him.
たいへん光栄なことに、この25年間に何度もリー・コニッツと共演する機会があり、彼から多くのことを学びました。
1995年、ドイツ・バイエルン州マルクトオーバードルフという小さな村で初めて共演したのですが、カルテット*としてリハーサルをする時間がなかったため、そのとき会ったばかりのリーは、バンドメンバーそれぞれとのデュオを提案してきました。私の順番が回って来て、＜Body and Soul＞をリーと演奏し始めると、彼は私の演奏を慎重に聴いていて、私のあるフレーズを引用しながらソロを始めました。そのソロの間中、他のサックスプレイヤーがこれまで行って来なかったようなやり方で、私の音に集中しながら「会話」を続けました。
デュオアルバム『Ashiya』**のリリースツアーでは、リーの80歳の誕生日と前後して2週間の旅を共にしました。彼は1日中、コンサートのために集中し、準備に時間を惜しまず、ライブが終わるとすぐ翌日の夜に向けて提案をしてきました。たとえば、「ウォルター、＜Alone Together＞をFマイナーで演奏してみないか？ 僕はDマイナーで演奏するから。」とか、「＜I’ll Remember April＞を違うテンポで同時にやってみよう。」とか。心は若く冒険心に溢れていました。
最後にレコーディングをともにしたのは2014年、それはまだリリースしていないのですが、そのときにはリーはたくさん”歌う”ようになりました。彼のジャズに対する献身的な愛情から私は非常に大きな影響を受けました。一緒に演奏する最後となった2017年のミュンヘン、そこでのMCが印象に残っています。「次の曲は＜Stella by Starlight＞です。僕らは皆、知り尽くした曲ですが、初めての曲のように演奏します。」 リーにもう会えないと思うと寂しくなります。

** ウォルターは、『Ashiya』の収録曲すべてをトリオの日本ツアー中に書き、特に＜Ashiya＞は、兵庫県芦屋市の「Left Alone」で書いたという。2020年1月31日で閉店したことを伝えると、「素晴らしいジャズクラブでした。とても残念です。」

1991年5月13日、ドイツ、シュツットガルト郊外生まれ。父と祖父が弾くアコーディオンとピアノの音に囲まれ育つ。9歳から正式に音楽を学び、高校卒業後、ボストン・バークリー音楽大学とアムステルダム・スクール・オブ・アートで学ぶ。1988年リック・ホランダー・カルテットのメンバーとしてヨーロッパ、アメリカ、日本をくまなく演奏してまわった。また、リー・コニッツ、ジェームス・ムーディー、チコ・ハミルトン等とも共演した。現在は、ミュンヘンを拠点に世界中で自己のトリオで活躍中。また、福盛進也トリオのメンバーとして活動している。ウォルター・ラング公式ウェブサイト
