今回、ドミニク・ミラーは、東京・コットンクラブで3日間6公演、神戸・チキンジョージで1公演の計7公演を行った。全公演を観て来たのでライブレポートをお届けしよう。先日お届けした来日直前インタビューもご参照いただきたい。
基本のセットリストは上記の通り。東京公演ではそれを公演ごとに1、2曲入れ替え、神戸公演は少し変更が多くなった。今回は東京公演最終日の2ndステージ、つまりラストショウの内容を中心に書き、神戸公演は最後に言及したい。
まず、オープニングの1曲目だ。この曲は次のアルバムに収録されるかもしれない未発表・未録音の曲で、私もこの曲は今回のツアーで初めて聴いた。
このオープニングチューンは見事だった。淡々と、十分な空間を持ちつつ、ゆっくりと、強い集中力で繰り返されるシングルノートの曲だ。静かな空間にドミニクの美しいギターの音が響き渡る。ドミニク自身が音の響きを楽しんでいるような曲だ。
ギタリストの場合、通常は「コード」にやはり意識が向くことが多いように思う。しかし、敢えてドミニクはこのゆっくりと淡々としたシングルノートの繰り返しの曲をオープニングに選んだ。これは非常に大胆で勇気が必要だと思う。なぜならこういった曲を大勢の聴衆の前で演奏する事は、相当な音そのものの持つ説得力、演奏への集中力がなければ観客の興味を惹きつける事は難しい。でも、それができるのがドミニク・ミラーというミュージシャンである。
ドミニクはミュージシャンの中でも特に音への意識が高い人だ。彼は音色やシングルノートのことに関して、先日香港のラジオ番組のインタビューでこのように語っていた。
「私が人生のほとんどで注力してきたのはトーンです。もし私がギターで何かにこだわっているとしたら、それは音色なんだ。音を出す時の純粋さ、それはヨガに近いというか、音の純度とは何かということなんです。韓国のコトの音楽を聴くと(注：これは勿論日本の「琴」の事を言っている）、アルバムの1時間ずっと単音を弾き続けているような音楽を聴くことがある。彼らは音の純粋さに全神経を集中させているので、私はそれに感銘を受けるのです。音作りが私のこだわりなんだ。」
ゆっくりした曲というのも、ドミニクの重要な音楽の価値観をよく示している。ドミニクは常々、演奏者にこのように勧めて来た。「私はすべてのミュージシャンに、あなたが演奏しているものが何であれ、毎日今までの半分のスピードで演奏することを勧めたい。その方がずっと難しいけれど、常に速くプレーするよりはずっといい。なぜなら、ゆっくり弾けないということは、速く弾いているときに本当のコントロールができていないということだからだ。」と言っている。これは真理だと思う。
このドミニク自身をよく表した非常に印象深い未発表曲については、神戸公演終演後にドミニクに質問したのだが、予想だにしなかった答えが返って来て私は「Really?」と大きな声で聞き返してしまった。しかしそれについては最後に述べる。
この見事なオープニングから2曲目「When I Close my Eyes」にそのまま続く。この2曲目は1曲目とは違い、ゆったりしているがシンコペーションのリズムが効いた曲だ。彼は南米に生まれた事もあり、自然とこのようなリズムが出てくる。とにかく心地よいリズムである。それは2005年以来、ドミニクが信頼する演奏パートナーである非常に才能豊かで有能なプレイヤーであるベーシストのニコラス・フィズマンによるところが大きい。演奏中この2人はいつも顔を見合わせ、お互いに笑顔でコミュニケーションをとりながら演奏を進める。見ていて気持ちがいいし、本当にこの息の合ったプレイはいつもながら素晴らしかった。
3曲目は「Valium」。東京ではラストショーだけこの曲に変わった。アルバム「Silent Light」収録のドミニクなりのフォークソングだ。他の回は「La Belle Dame Sans Regrets」(悔いなき美女）だった。これはドミニクの曲にスティングが歌詞をつけて彼のアルバムに収録されているボサ・ノヴァ・スタイルの曲で、ご存じの方も多かったはずだ。
4曲目はドミニクの長女Mistyにまつわる曲「Eclipse」。静謐で神秘的なこの曲から、そのまま今回のドミニクのツアーの前半でピアノを担当するジェイソン・リベロが流麗なピアノソロでビートルズの「Blackbird」を披露。終わると同時に、あの名曲「Shape Of My Heart」のイントロが始まり、会場の拍手が鳴り止まない。この曲の演奏を作曲者の本人の生演奏で聴けるのは、本当に贅沢な時間だった。
この曲で会場の熱気が一気に上がった後、次は「Cruel But Fair」で少しクールダウン。
新譜『Vagabond』の中で最も悲哀に満ちた内省的な曲だが、ドミニクの美しいメロディラインとジェイソン・リべロのピアノが見事に調和し、観客に大きな余韻を残していた。
しかし、今回は新譜『Vagabond』のツアーだったのだが、なんと全日程でこのアルバムから演奏されたのはこの1曲だけ。あの素晴らしいアルバムから何曲か聴ける事を期待していたので、これは少し残念だった。それが今回の公演で唯一残念な事であった。
そして後半に突入。ドミニクが「Everybody, OK?」と観客に声を掛ける。
8曲目「Exiting Purgatory」が始まる。この曲はその後の「Scirocco」とセットで演奏される曲だ。(どちらもアルバム『Ad Hoc』収録。）「Exiting Purgatory」とは日本語にすると「煉獄を出る」で、タイトル通り禍々しい曲だ。アルバムでは、ドミニクが曲の途中でエレキ・ギターで強烈な「咆哮」を上げるのですが、今回はバンドがアコースティックで演奏しているので、ジヴ・ラヴィッツの少し驚かすようなドラミングの繰り返しでその禍々しい雰囲気を出していた。
続く「Scirocco」は、「Exiting Purgatory」の最後のドミニクのギターの美しいフレーズを合図に、暗い煉獄から出て、広い草原に出て風に吹かれているような感覚になる曲だが、その広い自由な世界に脱出した歓喜をニコラスの5弦ベースが完璧に表現していた。素晴らしかった。
10曲目「February Sun」のイントロが流れる。これがドミニクが「パワー・アコースティック」と呼ぶ次の曲「Rush Hour」の導入部になる。
この「Rush Hour」は、実は非常に複雑な曲構造なのだが、彼ら自身はセットリストの中で「Rush Hour」としか書かない。しかし厳密に解説するとまず導入として「February Sun」のイントロ部が演奏され、（Rush Hour – Mustard Seed – Rush Hour）というメドレー形式になる。この途中の「Mustard Seed」という曲は、アルバム「5th House」のLP盤のボーナストラックなので、知らない方も多いかもしれない。
この曲はもう圧巻の一言である。観客を惹きつける複雑なリズムや構成も素晴らしいが、このような曲は百戦錬磨の凄腕ミュージシャンでなければ絶対に不可能な演奏だろう。ハイライトはなんと言ってもジヴ・ラヴィッツのドラムソロである。彼は演奏のアイデアのバリエーションの豊富さもさることながら、やはり音がいい。彼の芯のある大きな音は本当に素晴らしかった。
この曲の後は東京の最終公演ではドミニクが大好きなビートルズの「A Day In The Life」が演奏された。会場の観客も、この曲についてはよくわかっている人も多かったようで、大合唱につつまれ、ドミニクもとても嬉しそうだった。
本編最後の曲は「La Boca」。このタイトルは、ドミニクが生まれたアルゼンチンのブエノスアイレスの地区の名前である。彼の最初のソロアルバム『First Touch』に収録されたこの曲は、ドミニクのまさしくルーツそのものの曲で、メンバーの奏でる軽快なリズムに合わせて会場のお客さんも皆揺れていた。
盛大なスタンディング・オベーションの後、アンコールは「Truco」。ドミニクはそれまで弾いていたメインギター、彼が「グレース」という愛称で呼んでいる日本のK.Yairiの小さなパーラータイプの白いギターから、タカミネのアコースティックギターに持ち替えた。 ドミニクは長年にわたり多くの日本製ギターを使用してきた。彼ほど音にこだわる人が日本製のギターを愛用してくれるのは本当に嬉しい事だ。
「Truco」は、騒々しいアルゼンチンのカードゲームに関する曲で、ドミニクの得意技の素晴らしいタッピングが聴ける彼の代表曲の曲のひとつだ。ドミニクの神技的なタッピングとメンバーのキレのあるリズムの応酬にゾクゾクするような興奮を感じる。また、この曲はアルバム・バージョンよりもライブの方がはるかに素晴らしい曲なので観客も大興奮で彼らに盛大な拍手とスタンディングオベーションを贈っていた。
ちなみにドミニクがソロ演奏でスティングの曲「Fields Of Gold」や「Fragile」を演奏した回もあった。特に「Fields Of Gold」に関しては、出色の出来栄えであった。ドミニクはいつも自分を「自分はギタリストとしては大した事はない」と謙遜するが、とんでもない話である。これほどまでに音の美しさ、コントロールされた表現に感動させられるギタリストはなかなかいないと改めて実感した。
神戸公演について。ドミニクは2014年から自身の音楽で日本に頻繁に来日するようになった。
その来日実現のために尽力し、それ以降もドミニクの公演でお世話をしていたある男性がいたのだが、その男性は2021年に若くして急逝した。それから初の神戸公演であったので、今回の神戸公演はその男性に捧げられた。少し東京とセットリストは変わったのは東京よりも会場がかなりカジュアルな雰囲気だったからだろう。ドミニクが敬愛するバーデン・パウエルに捧げた曲「Baden」や「Ripped Nylon」といったかなり元気なチューンも披露された。神戸公演のセットリストは一番下に書いておく。
日本公演全体を通して、オープニングのシングルノートを淡々と繰り返す新曲「Rita」から激しい「Rush Hour」や「Truco」まで、非常に多彩な内容で観客を飽きさせない構成だった。
彼のライブに初めて来た人でも、ドミニク・ミラーというミュージシャンがどういうミュージシャンであるかがよく伝わったと思う。実際にあまり彼の事をよく知らずに初めて来た多くの人が、1stショーに来て彼らに大感動し、追加でラストショーにも足を運び、沢山のアルバムを買って帰った。
最後に、ドミニクから聞いたオープニングの未発表曲「Rita」について。
私は今回彼が『Vagabond』から1曲しか演奏しなかったので、このシングルノートの内省的な印象の曲でアルバムの全体的なイメージを象徴しているのかと思っていた。しかし私が「これはどういう曲なのでしょう？」と聞いたら、彼は「<Rita>は僕の犬の名前だ。犬の曲だよ。」と。私は意外な答えに驚いて思わず「犬！？」と大声で聞き返してしまった。そうしたら「そうだよ。僕は自分の犬をとても愛しているんだ。」と彼に力説されてしまった。
いや、それは私も知っている。彼が2匹の犬を飼っていて、自宅にいる時は散歩係である事も。
しかし、まさかあの曲調で犬の曲だとは全く思わなかったのだ。私はドミニクを少し理解していたつもりでいたが、まだまだだったようだ。本当に興味が尽きない人である。

I attended all 7 performances of Dominic Miller, whom I interviewed just before coming to Japan, and would like to bring you a live report.
This time Dominic played seven shows in Japan: six shows over three days at Tokyo Cotton Club and one show at Kobe Chicken George. The basic setlist is as above.
At the Tokyo show these were replaced by one or two songs at each performance, but at the Kobe show there were a few more changes. In this article I will focus on the content of the final performance on the last day of the Tokyo show, and mention the Kobe show at the end.
Firstly, the opening track. This is an unreleased and unrecorded song that may appear on the next album, and I also heard it for the first time on this tour.
This opening song was really brilliant. It’s a single note song, Dominic slowly and steadily repeated to play single notes with leaving a lot of space between each note. The venue resounded with his beautiful guitar notes. It’s a song where Dominic himself seems to be enjoying the sound of the music.This track completely showed the kind of musician Dominic Miller is and the kind of music views he has.
For most guitarists, “chords” are still the main focus of their attention.However, Dominic dared to choose this single-note, slowly and indifferently repeated song with many marginal notes for the opening. This is very bold and requires courage. This is because it is difficult to perform such music in front of a large audience without the charm and persuasiveness of the tone itself and the strong concentration of the performance to hold the audience’s interest. But Dominic Miller is a musician who can do it.
Dominic is one of the most sound-conscious of musicians. He had this to say about tone and single notes in a recent interview on a Hong Kong radio program.
“What I’ve focused on most of my life is tone. So if I have been obsessed about anything on the guitar, it’s the sound of it. It’s the purity of striking out, it’s kind of almost like yoga or it’s like what is the purity of the note. If I listen to Koto music from Korea (N.B : Of course, he is referring to the Japanese Koto.) or something like that I’ve heard some music which I can listen to an album of Koto where a guy will be playing single notes for an hour. That inspired me because they focus all their attention on the purity of the sound. It’s the sound production so that’s my obsession.”
Also the slow songs are a great example of the musical values Dominic holds dear. Dominic has always encouraged performers to: “I would encourage all musicians great whatever you’re playing play it at half speed every day whatever you’re practicing try it at half the speed. It’s much more difficult but it’s much better for you than just playing fast all the time. Because if you can’t play it slowly it means that when you’re playing fast you’re not really in control.” I also think this is a truth.
I asked Dominic after the Kobe show about this very impressive unreleased song, which is a good representation of Dominic himself.But he gave me an answer I didn’t expect, and I was so surprised that I said out loud, ‘Really?’ I said. But I will mention that at the end.
This stunning opening leads directly into the second song ‘When I Close My Eyes’. This second track differs from the first in that it is laid back but has a strong syncopated rhythm. He was born in South America, so these rhythms come naturally to him.
It’s just a pleasant rhythm.This is largely due to bassist Nicolas Fiszman, a very talented and capable player who has been Dominic’s trusted performing partner since 2005.
Throughout the performance they were always looking at each other, smiling and communicating. It was a pleasure to watch and they were really great, playing in sync and having chemistry as always.
The third song is ‘Valium’. In Tokyo only the last show changed to this song. It is Dominic’s folk song from the album ‘Silent Light’.
The other shows, it was ‘La Belle Dame Sans Regrets’, which is a Bossa Nova style song composed by Dominic with lyrics by Sting, and many of you may have heard it because it is on his album.
The fourth song is ‘Eclipse’ which is about Dominic’s eldest daughter Misty and from this serene and mystical song, Jason Rebello, who will be playing piano for the first half of this tour, performed the Beatles’ ‘Blackbird’ with an elegant and beautiful piano solo.
As soon as the song ended, the intro to the famous song ‘Shape of My Heart’ began and the audience erupted in applause. It was a truly luxurious time to hear this song performed live by the composer himself.
After this song got the crowd going, the next song ‘Cruel But Fair’ cooled them down a bit. It is the most sorrowful and introspective song on the new record ‘Vagabond’, but Dominic’s beautiful melody line and Jason Rebello’s piano harmonized beautifully, leaving a great aftertaste in the audience’s hearts. However, this time they were touring their new album, Vagabond, and to my surprise, only this song was played from this album on the entire tour. This was a bit disappointing because we were expecting to hear some songs from that great album. That was my only disappointment in this show.
Then the second half of the show begins. Dominic calls out to the crowd, “Everybody, OK?” The eighth song ‘Exiting Purgatory’ begins. This song is played as a set piece with the subsequent song ‘Scirocco’. (Both are from the album ‘AdHoc’.) As the title suggests, the song “Exiting Purgatory” has an ominous feel to it. On the album, Dominic ‘roars’ violently on electric guitar in the middle of the song, but this time the band is acoustic, so that sinister atmosphere was created by the repetition of Ziv Ravitz’s slightly startling drumming. The following the song called ‘Scirocco’ cues a beautiful guitar phrase played by Dominic at the end of ‘Exiting Purgatory’, which gives you the feeling that you have escaped from a dark purgatory and are blowing in the wind on a wide open meadow. The joy of breaking out into a wide, free world was perfectly expressed by Nicolas’ 5-string bass playing. It was brilliant.
Next, track 10; The February Sun started playing.This becomes the intro to the next track, Rush Hour which Dominic calls ‘power acoustic’.’Rush Hour’ is actually a very complex song structure, but they themselves only write ‘Rush Hour’ in the set list. Strictly speaking, part of ‘February Sun’ is played first as an introduction, followed by a medley (Rush Hour – Mustard Seed – Rush Hour).You may not know ‘Mustard Seed’ in the middle, as it is a bonus track on the LP version of the album ‘5th House’.
The song they’re playing was overwhelming and is a word of incredible.The intricate rhythms and compositions that attract the audience are wonderful, and performing a song like this would be absolutely impossible without veteran musicians trained by many experiences.The highlight of this song is Ziv Ravitz’s drum solo. He has a great variety of ideas for playing, but he also has a great sound. His big, solid core sound was really amazing. At the final show in Tokyo this was followed by Dominic’s favourite Beatles song ‘A Day In The Life’. Dominic seemed very happy because many in the audience seemed to know the song well and sang along loudly.
The final song is ‘La Boca’. The title is the name of the district in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where Dominic was born. The song, which appeared on his first solo album ‘First Touch’, is a true reflection of Dominic’s roots and had everyone in the audience swaying to the lively, groovy rhythms played by the band members.
After a huge standing ovation, the encore was ‘Truco.’ Dominic has switched from his main guitar, a small white Japanese-made K.Yairi’s parlor-type guitar he calls “Grace,” to a Takamine acoustic guitar. Dominic has used many Japanese guitars over the years.I’m really happy that musicians like him, who are very particular about the sound, are using guitars made in Japan. ‘Truco’ is a song about an Argentinean card game and one of his best known songs, in which you can hear the great tapping that is Dominic’s signature technique. Dominic’s divine tapping technique and the members’ crisp rhythmic exchanges gave me tingle with excitement. As this song is much better live than the album version, so the audience was also very excited and give them a standing ovation at the end again.
At other shows, Dominic also played Sting’s songs “Fields of Gold” and “Fragile” on solo guitar. The performance of ‘Fields Of Gold’ was particularly outstanding.
Dominic always humbles himself by saying that he is not much of a guitarist, but that’s outrageous. I was reminded that there are few guitarists who can impress an audience with such beauty of sound and controlled expression.
About the Kobe show. Dominic started to visit Japan frequently with his music in 2014. There was a man who was instrumental in making that visit to Japan possible and who took care of his shows afterwards, but he passed away suddenly at a young age in 2021.Since then it was his first performance in Kobe, so this show dedicated to the man. The setlist was slightly different from Tokyo, probably because the venue had a much more casual atmosphere than Tokyo. The band played ‘Baden’, a song dedicated to Dominic’s beloved Baden Powell, and ‘Ripped Nylon’, which is a rather uplifting tune. The setlist for the Kobe show is below.
Throughout the entire Japan tour, from the first song ‘Rita’, which opened with a single note repeated in indifferently, to the intense ‘Rush Hour’ and ‘Truco’, there was a plenty of variety to make the audience endless fun.
The performance gave even those new to his live show a good idea of the kind of musician Dominic Miller is. In fact, many people who came for the first time and didn’t know much about him came to the first show and were so impressed that they came to the last show and bought a lot of his albums.So,personally, it would have been a perfect score if a couple of songs from the new ‘Vagabond’ album had been added.
Finally, I should write about the opening unreleased song ‘Rita’, which Dominic told me about.This time he only played one song from “Vagabond”, so I assumed that this single-note, introspective impression would symbolize the image of the album as a whole. And I asked him, ‘What kind of song is that? And he said, ‘Rita’s the name of my dog. It’s a dog song.’ Surprised by the unexpected answer, so I asked back loudly, “A dog!?” Then he told me emphatically, ‘Yes, I do. I love my dog very much.’ No, I know he has two dogs and I know he is a dog walker when he is at home. But I had no idea that the such a single note tune was about a dog. I thought I was able to understand Dominic a little bit, but it seems like I wasn’t quite there yet. He is truly an endlessly interesting person.
