Sorry to hear of Ryo’s passing. We played together in a few groups in the 80s.i think Ryo did 2 European tours with my group as well, and we also recorded together. That  was in the time period Ryo was playing jazz. He was an excellent player and had his own sound and ways of playing. Then I think he returned to Japan and played many different types of music. About 5 years ago he sent me a recording of a song of mine we had played together in the 80’s called Haiti B. He had made an amazing arrangement of the song – jazz mixed with funk-and recorded it with his students! He was always busy working with different types of music! Knowing him and playing together was always a great pleasure!

Ryoの逝去の報に接し悲しい思いでいっぱいです。Ryoとは80年代にいくつかのバンドでいっしょでした。わたし自身のバンドでも２度ヨーロッパ・ツアーに出たことがあります。レコーディングでもいっしょだったことがあります。Ryoがジャズを演奏していた頃の話ね。とても優れたプレイヤーで独自の音と技法を持っていました。それからたしか日本に戻っていろんなタイプの音楽を演奏してたのね。５年くらい前、私の曲を１曲録音して送ってきてくれた。〈Haiti B〉という曲で 80年代にいっしょに演奏した曲。ファンク風味のジャズという素晴らしいアレンジで自分の生徒と録音してたわ！彼はいつも忙しくいろんな音楽に取り組んでたのね！彼を知っていっしょに演奏することはいつもとっても楽しみだった。

1938年、カリフォルニア州ヴェンチュラ生まれ。ピアニスト、エデュケイター。2018 NEA ジャズ・マスター。ロサンゼルス音楽院卒。チャーリー・パーカーを聴いてジャズを志し、サックス奏者チャールズ・ブラッキーンと結婚し1965年NYに移住、数多くのミュージシャンと共演。バークリー音大、ニュースクールで後進の指導にあたる。
